FOG:
DID YOU KNOW. . . ?

  • If the fog were really like a cat, it would result from two alleyfogs yowrling it up out in the night while they are in heat, instead of an inversion layer caused by diminishing surface temperatures.

  • Sandburg’s multi-volume biography of Abraham Lincoln is one of the most famous books ever written about the sixteenth president. In it, Sandburg put forth his hypothesis that Lincoln came to Washington on little cat feet, sat, and then moved on after being shot in the head.

  • There are hundreds of recordings of Sandburg reading his own and other people’s poetry. It was not until years after his death that anyone listened to these recordings: as it turns out, no one told him to read out loud, so they only contain the sounds of him licking his finger, turning pages, and scratching.

  • In 1978, the centenary of Sandburg’s birth, the Carl Sandburg Society held a contest for people to submit other things that come on little cat feet. The contest was cancelled due to the unexpected number of obscene submissions it received.

  • When he was nineteen years old, Sandburg travelled across America as, to use his word, a “hobo.” He is believed to have once stolen a pie that was cooling on Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle’s window sill, and to have killed the real Carl Sandburg with a chain, taking his identity.
